Introduction
The Roswell incident is often presented as a mystery about a possible crashed extraterrestrial craft. Within the history of UFOs and nuclear weapons, however, its most important significance is different. Roswell illustrates how a secret nuclear-intelligence programme could leave behind real physical debris, generate contradictory official statements, and create a lasting UFO narrative because the true explanation could not be disclosed at the time.

What Project Mogul was built to detect
Project Mogul emerged during a period when the United States urgently needed ways to learn whether the Soviet Union had successfully detonated an atomic bomb. Before satellites existed, American planners explored multiple methods of long-range detection. One idea relied on the fact that large explosions generate low-frequency sound waves that can travel vast distances through atmospheric layers.
To test this concept, researchers associated with New York University and the Army Air Forces launched long trains of high-altitude balloons carrying microphones, transmitters, radar-reflector assemblies and other experimental equipment.
